I am about to embark on a similar journey, so have been researching.
In case you haven't found them yet, here are a few places to start looking for an answer:

Jay D,
I bought an inexpensive Ford Mustang style shifter on eBay with the intention of doing what you are planning. Yes, it’s doable. Beware, the cheaper the price, the less likely it will deliver a nice smooth shift. The one I bought was pretty much junk. So find out what the reviews say, I guess is my advice.
If you have the Camaro shifter, it will work on the S10 shifter box but the stem will need to be modified to your liking. If you need dimensions, let me know. Also, the short throw shifters are out there in the 1992-95 S10 trucks. If you are handy, there’s a way to make a standard throw shifter into a short throw shifter. There’s a DIY here on the Stovebolt. LINK to DIY.

I set up the T5 in my 46 with a Hurst Blackjack short throw unit, fit to that a tall Locar? Shift arm which I heated and massaged 2 bends into to get it where and how I wanted.
Yes the Blackjack was stupid pricy at over $200., but I got over that the first time I drove it as the quality is there, and a few years on is still like new.
The locar shift arm was a repackaged return so that was a savings, used an old school looking black knob᠁.

With A cheap tool you are happy when you buy it, & complain every time you use it

Hanks Custodian,
I have a Hurst T5 shifter in my 1963 and can also say it is a quality shifter. I found mine at the salvage yard for . . . well, I better not say . . . but less than you paid. I think the Hurst shifter is great. Every bit as good as the factory T5 shifter in my other truck. It would be money well spent.
