i was going through carlisle a few weeks back and came across a GM bus. it appeared to be early 60's model? on the back was a chrome emblem which read "super" within the V6 emblem. i have never seen one of these before and wondered what it represented? dennis

They are big block v6 motors.

Are you sure it was a gas engine? Maybe a DD 6V-?

i was lucky enough to hear it run, he was leaving at the time. it was a diesel engine with standard trans. the metal emblem was located in the middle of rear cover. it might have been added on? dennis

Then it is likely something that GM Truck & Coach used to identify or signify a bus model.

i have been searching around for a picture of that emblem to no avail. i never knew there were so many different gmc V6 combo's, let alone the monster V12. is it possible that the super V6 was the toro-flow diesel model? dennis

got a lead on the super V6, was told it was a 530 detroit diesel engine and was common in coaches. dennis

What about a Chevy 3/4 ton V-6 gas engine? My neighbor has a 63 chevy with a dump box. The side are rusted around the bottom of the fenders after sitting out side for 35 years the rebuilt moter runs! The Bed is a standard bed but it has the dumping action. The cab was infested by mice who lived in the seats and head liner.

What's the demand for this kind of truck?

i dont believe the chevy trucks ever came with the V6, just the GMC. i have heard alot of impressive things about the V6, though.

i just pulled a 305 V6 out of my 63 4x4 and put in a 283. that v6 didnt have much power and i was only getting 8 miles per gallon.

The GMC Big Block V6 came in a few sizes, the 305 being the baby of the bunch. as far as power goes, they were built for pulling power, not speed, you wont want one if you want to build a race car. THESE ARE TRUCK ENGINES.

That being said, I will be pulling the 305E out of my 65 1 ton, but I'll be installing either a 401M, HD478 or 351E. I need to dismantle them to see which one is in working order. the 401M is my first choice.

GMC Did build a Diesel version, called the Toro-Flow. they came in either D478, DH478, D351 or D637 or DH637 models, the 637 being the V8.

GMC sold many of the V6s as replacement engines for other trucks, they would provide a KIT with every thing needed, and you just dropped off your old tied truck at the dealership, and they would install a NEW GMC drivetrain, didn't matter if it was a GMC or not, many of the old White 3000 trucks got retrofitted with these, as did older GMCs, Chevy's Ford's Mack's' or what have you. So finding one in a Chevy truck is probable.

Chevy also used the GM Diesel 6V53 in their trucks back in the 60s too.

Then,too,Ive seen several trucks that changed from being a Chevy to being a GMC or the other way around,by changing accident or rust damaged front sheet metal with whatever the owner happened to have in the back lot.
Speed
