What you need to look for is the number cast into the block above the right side oil pan flange toward the front of the engine. Just to the rear of the distributor is the engine serial number. Since this is your first post, Welcome to the site. Suggest that you head over to the Welcome Centre and post an introduction there about your truck and yourself.

So, looks like you have an engine manufactured at Flint MI on 12/23/56 (for the '57 model year). The '8' you specified on the end of the serial number is likely a 'B'? If it's a 'B' it would have been originally equipped with a Powerglide and should have hydraulic lifters. For confirmation on the year, check the conveyor number above the starter. Yours should be CON# L##6. The 6 at the end the conveyor number means it was made in 1956 (for 1957 model year).
I think this is correct, it's early and I haven't had my coffee yet...others will chime in if I'm off the mark!

If so, it was made Dec 23 1958 which would be for the 1959 model year With a build date of Dec 23rd (F1223B), it's unlikely it was machined and assembled on the same day you're saying it was cast.
