old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! My name is LeRoy, I'm 51 years old, a plumber for 29 years and ever since I was a youngster I've been into cars. The first car I ever had was a 1955 Chevy half ton, short box, step sides, with a six cylinder and three on the tree. It was a Gulf Oil gas station truck, so it's paint job was orange and blue. Maybe some of you remember those bright orange styrofoam balls that Gulf gave away and you could stick it on your radio antenae. I was 15 years old then, now I've come full circle and I just bought a 56 Chevy 6400. I don't have it home yet and it's driving me up the wall. I want it in my yard ! This truck looks good so far. I haven't heard it run yet. But I see no rust holes in the cab, and I can't see any missing parts. I haven't seen the serial number on the block yet, so I'm not sure what size engine it is. I'm assuming it's a 261. The generator is a 12 volt with the red tag on it. I wonder if it came that way from day one ? I'm fairly sure it spent it's work career as a grain hauler, it's got a 2 speed rear axel with power take off and hydraulic hoist. The bed is gone, but the hydraulic cylinder is still there. Other than that everything is there, even the original tail lights, and the radio delete plate ! The cab is full of mice, so my cat has a mission comming up.. It was last registered in 95 so it hasn't been sitting too long. I have 2 garages behind my place , one is finished off and heated. So I will have a nice project for the winter. Just have to figure out how to get the truck in the garage, it's too tall I'm sure. Might have to pull the cab off and put the running gear in the heated shop and the cab in the other. Sorry for such a long post, but I'm excited. I haven't been exicted about anything for the past few years, but this Chevy has me wound up ! | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy ND1956Chevy6400, Welcome, keep us posted on your progress please, and ask as many questions as you need to, and we'll try and help. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2006 Posts: 23 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jun 2006 Posts: 23 | Welcome, make sure to post pictures of it here! If you have enough seiling height in the building you could add another section to the garage door and move the header beam up. That's what my dad did to get his '52 Autocar in the garage ! What should I do ? | | | | | Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 584 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 584 | Hey NC1956Chevy6400,
Welcome to the most fun website on earth! The only way I know how to do pictures will be (I say this humbly) above your head using an outsource server etc. Somebody will chime in with the easier "Webshots" type version I'm sure.
I can't wait to see your new baby!...and I am darn glad you are excited about something if it has been several years coming. Funny how an old hunk of metal will make life seem worth living. My wife has been somewhat sick and thou I am religious, and comforted by that, I do get a bit of comfort from my tatered ol' cabovers.

There is a vast amount of knowledge out there in ciber Stove bolt page. I have a GMC 270 engine that I am in the process of going thru for my 48 Dump Truck. The Head has just been finished and now I am needing to get the Crank turned. Because of a lousy installation of the rear seal my Crank is a little ate up. When I pulled the rear main cap off you could see the rope gasket smashed by the cap allowing the motor to leak oil, and i mean Leak oil. Dirt got in the bearing groove, after filling that up it started to spread out onto the rear main bearing, grooving out the crank. One problem that I am moving into is how to put the Altenator on. I have a pully that is almost an inch in width on the crank Water pump and Generator. I am replacing the Generator and now I need to figure out how to put a pully on the motor which will run the alternator. Any Ideas on how to mount another pully on the crank to run the alternator?? I think this is the least of my problems but it will take my mind off the motor problems. Oh yea any recomendations for rings. I just pulled out the pistons and I had # 5 piston compression ring fall off. Maybe that is why I had 40lbs in that cylinder?
Any tips on finding guidance on assembling this engine.
Thanks and Welcome.
It cost, WHAT? Dam!

When I setup a link I went to http://www.webshots.com I logged in and created a new account (it's free). Then created a new album and uploaded all the pictures to that new album. I am assuming you have the pictires off your camera and on your computer and you know where they are on your computer. After you have the new album setup you can copy and paste the link to this new album here in the forum. Give it a whirl and let us know how it goes. Yes, this bunch of Big Bolt fellers are sorta special, but everyone at TSP is ready and willing to help, give you advice, tell you what they have done (wrong), and yell at you to get on with your project. Most of 'em are not known for their typing skills, and some appear to have trouble reading, so pictures will do the job of keeping them salivating and smiling at your well found fortune of owning a Stovebolt.
I encourage you to SEARCH the Tech Tips and Archives. There is a wealth of information here on fixin' up an old 'Bolt.
I assure you there is nuthin' you will have to do to your 'Bolt that has not already been done (and probably been done wrong, the first time) by somebody out there.
Welcome to John's garage!
Drivin' down a 2 lane country road in a stovebolt.....cowboy, it don't get no better than this!
