One of his many questions to me was, what prevents the gas station's fuel pump from shutting off when it reaches full. Since I've haven't had such a problem, that I remember ,,, I told him I would ask the experts. Any idea?

Slowing down flow will help. Had a small tube attached to the top of the tank, going up to top of the filler neck. Allows air to to escape. Still need to slow flow down towards full but helps.

You shouldn't do it with modern cars, either since sometimes the latch mechanism sticks.
Even old cars with vent tubes in the filler neck can't always shut down fast enough as the fuel in most pumps comes out extremely fast and overcomes the vent.

Before automatic shutoffs, that's the way it was done. 1948 3/4-Ton 5-Window Flatbed Chevrolet 34 Years. Plus watch the gallons on the pump to guess when it’s getting close. 1957 Chevy 3200Daily DriverPS, A/C, Tilt column, Rebuilt 350, Rebuilt TH350, Reupholstered Bench Seat, sound proof/insulated, LED headlights/taillights/backup lights/interior courtesy lights. If the right side of the vehicle was lower than the driver's side, it would hardly fill at all. So I didn't worry about the auto shutoff. It was easy to look down the filler neck and see. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 1,458 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 1,458 | Never rely on the automatic shutoff when filling antique cars. You shouldn't do it with modern cars, either since sometimes the latch mechanism sticks. The air in the tank being displaced by the gas being pumped in has to come out the filler neck on the tank on these ole rigs, modern rigs nozzle fits tighter to filler, air / fuel vapor enter the vapor (EVAP) canister, fuel vapors held. Farmers can tell you about plugged EVAP canisters & fuel tanks sucked in.

Kinda forgot why. Now I can reply to my friends inquiry. I find getting gas at COSTCO is pretty quiet as compared to a gas station on a busy street.

I got to my 5 gal, let go of the handle it kept going. should I run, squeeze the hose? then it just stopped like nothing happened. I told the people inside, they didn't seam too care much. As left I told the guy in the car behind me what happened. then left.
