My 53 frame has a bad spot where the front of the right rear shackle mounts, and I am looking (across the state) at a 1954 half ton frame to take it's place. I see that the very back cross member is a little different looking, but are there other differences that would make it not work?

That was to fit the deeper bed (lower floor). You should be able to bolt a 47-53 bed on a 54 frame without issues.
