I change the oil in every single vehicle I've ever owned at 3000 miles regardless of whether or not the oil or filter might last longer.
$30 or whatever an oil change costs is very cheap insurance.

1948 3/4-Ton 5-Window Flatbed Chevrolet 34 Years. Now with a '61 261, 848 head, Rochester Monojet carb, SM420 4-speed, 4.10 rear, dual reservoir MC, Bendix up front, 235/85R16 tires, 12-volt w/alternator, electric wipers and a modern radio in the glove box.

The 855 Cummins engines we ran that way had 50K miles or more without a full oil change. Oil analysis by an independent testing lab after every filter change confirmed that the oil was still within limits for continued use.

It was about 6" in diameter and a foot long. IIRC, we changed filter elements on a 6 month rotation, about 30K to 50K miles. It took about a 1-gallon fresh oil top off with new oil in a 10 gallon capacity system.

Loaded at 50,000 lbs. one way and 80,000 lbs. heading home. Of course they ate 2 quarts each trip so it was like a small oil change each night.

Put in -.002 rod bearings in the truck,old ones dark not out. I knew this wasn't the trouble,gasket stayed on the block,put the pan back on ran a few months. -.002 mains appeared for 40$$ pulled the pan rolled in -.002's fixed it !! Now keeps 30 lb. gauge pegged summer and winter. Itmostly changes it's own oil from leaks and use,straight propane burner doesn't suffer with sludge,oil stays like new about 11'000 miles by now is fine. | | |
