I have a Chevy 48 Loadmaster 1 1/2 Ton dump Truck with a blown 235 engine. I have a GMC 270 moter in good shape, I would like to put the GMC moter in the chevy Truck. I know the motor block is 6 inches longer so I will need to move the radiator forward. The Big question is this will the GMC moter fit the chevy Bell housing & tranny????
What if I take the Moter & tranny out of the GMC and put it in the Chevy???????
will the drive shaft and PTO from the chevy fit in the GMC transmission???????????

Any suggestions would be Appreciated!

Welcomne to the Stovebolt!

If you poke around in the Tech Tips area of this web site I think you'll find a discussion of putting a GMC 302 in a Chevy pickup. The 270 and 302 are basically identical on the outside, so what you read there is correct for this swap too.

Basically the 270 should bolt to the bellhousing just fine.

The question about using the GMC bellhousing is more compicated. What year is it? '54 or later and the answer is different than if its '47 to '53. The issue is that the crossmember changed in '54.

You also have potential issues related to the foot starter if you are swapping to a motor that was 12-volt.

The moter is from a 1947 GMC 2 ton truck, this of course has the front engine mounts. Could I use the moter & tranny from the GMC 2 Ton truck and slip it under the hood? How about the linkage hooking up? For example PTO, Drive line, Cluch & ect.
I noticed the GMC Moter is 6 inched longer than the chevy moter, will that work?

The GMC motor is longer and that does present some issues. Read the tech tip I referenced it will tell you most the details regarding length.

The PTO, clutch and driveline should all be easy. Tougher might be accelerator linkage, but if you can simply swap to the GMC stuff you should be fine.

There are some aspects of a '47 that are different than the '48 to '53 trucks and I'm not an expert on those details.

Actually the GMC engine is a little over 2" longer.

Find someone to trade you a GMC engine for a Chevy. There's alot of people going "V-8" now days so finding a good 235 or 261 shouldn't be too tough. Just a thought,
Scott

my '50 4400 now has a 270 in place of where the 235 used to be. This swap was done long before i got it though.

My first question would be, Why do you want a 270 GMC?
If you are thinking about repowering an older unit, repower it with a more modern engine. A '65 or later 292 would be a much better choice. With a little work on the head, a Clifford cam, HEI ignition and improved carburation the 292 will but out 300 HP.
The 270 is two inches longer than a Chevy 6 and it is antiquated technology. Wm.

I put a GMC 270 into a '38 Chevy 2dr sdn in 1951, I had to relocate the front engine mount and move the radiator to the front of the core support. The Chevy bell housing bolted right up. Used a Chevy water pump, it was shorter..
That 38 Chevy was a rocket ship, it would out run anything in Eastern Idaho. Wm.

Using a 270 GMC to replace a 216 was cutting edge technolgy in 1951. I know several people that are still in love with the Jimmy's for vintage racing applications, however, in dollars spent and the overall outcome, a late model 292 will win every time.
I might be a little bias because I live in the Western US, I am use to traveling on roads connecting areas that are in many cases 100 mile plus apart. Back in the good ole days there usually was a service station/garage at least every thirty or do miles apart, that is not the case anymore.. Sign on #95 Nevada/Idaho.. Next Service 98 miles.. Wm.

Not sure how a 292 is going to help on the distance between gas stations over a 270.
Some of us like old stuff, some of us also live out west & some of us also take long road trips in remote areas with old design engines.
