'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed. '55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.

The element can bridge, short out and has been known to catch fire at times if it doesn't run your battery down first. Always look at the element before you push it in to heat. '57 GMC 102, Original 347 V8, HydraMatic, 3.08 rear gear, added A/C, disk front brakes, HEI, AFB carb, '98 Honda Black Currant paint. T-boned and totaled 10/12 '52 GMC 152 Stake Bed, Original 228, SM420, added A/C, HEI, disk front brakes, '67 Chev 3.55 rear gear. Gets used as a real truck.

Mrs. Wally and I were watching the submarine races one time before we were married and the lighter in my '51 Chev started to smoke and then the wire glowed red hot. I reached under and pulled it off. I also found considerable sympathy for my burnt hand. 1948 3/4-Ton 5-Window Flatbed Chevrolet 34 Years. Now with a '61 261, 848 head, Rochester Monojet carb, SM420 4-speed, 4.10 rear, dual reservoir MC, Bendix up front, 235/85R16 tires, 12-volt w/alternator, electric wipers and a modern radio in the glove box.

Instead of pulling the element from the lighter, I simply replaced it with a voltmeter like this: volt/temp meter

No reason that wouldn't work if you hooked it to the BAT terminal on the switch.
