Where was the cigarette lighter originally tied into? I figure it was either off the amp meter side where the power comes from the battery or off the starter switch. Thx

Not from where the power comes from the battery, other side of meter, should throw meter to neg. or discharge when turned on!

Look at figure 135 for trucks
http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/accessories/1951am/51aim57.htm

A real cigarette lighter element is a spiral of wire that can eventually rust with usage. The element can bridge, short out and has been known to catch fire at times if it doesn't run your battery down first. Always look at the element before you push it in to heat. Back when everybody smoked, it was common knowledge. I would add an inline fuse or remove the element.

I wanted to use my lighter socket for phone charging so I fused it at 5 amps and then I pulled the element from my lighter in case someone pushed it in.

Buoymaker says "The element can bridge, short out and has been known to catch fire at times."

Mrs. Wally and I were watching the submarine races one time before we were married and the lighter in my '51 Chev started to smoke and then the wire glowed red hot. I reached under and pulled it off. I also found considerable sympathy for my burnt hand.

Ouch! What a way to put a damper on Montana submarine watching?

Instead of pulling the element from the lighter, I simply replaced it with a voltmeter like this:
volt/temp meter

No reason that wouldn't work if you hooked it to the BAT terminal on the switch.
