Hello everyone. I just bought a 1946 1 1/2 ton with a platform dump on it. I would like to know if the dump is something that came on the truck or is it something that was installed at a later date. Also I was wondering the best way to take the hood stainless trim strips off without bending them. One other thing I was wondering is the hole in the grill, is there supposed to be a cover for it?Thanks for your input.

Hello Mike and Welcome Aboard!. Always glad to see new bolters join in the fun. Hope I can be of some help on your questions.

A. The dump mechanism is and has always been an aftermarket upfit. Likely the body too although some platform/stakebodies were factory installed. By that I mean they were ordered by a dealer direct from GM or FoMoCo and perhaps others. These bodies were produced by other builders and shipped to Detroit where they were installed by upfitters and then shipped to the selling dealer complete. A variation of this, the Chassis Pool upfitter, is still around today.
B. I'll let someone more familiar with the 46' help on this.
C. The hole was for the hand start crank and there was no cover to my knowledge.

There are little tabs on the back side of the hood strips that you bend and then gently pull the strips off.More likely than not the tabs will break but are avaliable from different suppliers.I believe there is a crank hole cover avaliable.

Chevrolet usually published a book for the dealer of special bodies for Chevrolet trucks or as my 35 book is called special equipment for Chevrolet trucks. Some special bodies were installed at the Dealers, some if for a major fleet buyer installed at the factory or the chassis was shipped to the body builder for their installation. I had a 1949 3///4 ton with a dealer installed National dump hoist which used the factory pickup box.

I have a '46 2-ton with a single hyd. cyl. no bed though. This truck is a long term project I hope to start in a year or so. Order all the aftermarket catalogs you can get. A lot of pick up parts fit these trucks. Keep checking this board. Feel free with more questions.
