For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 212 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 212 | How much oil does it take to fill a two speed rear end? I'm not sure I understand how it works. There are two fill plugs on the rear end. One in the place you normally find one on the ball in the axle, and one on the two speed itself. The one on the two speed in much higher than the one on the axle, which makes me think the two oil supplies are seperate. One for the two speed and one for the rear end itself.
What kind of oil do you put in the two speed. It is leaking, but there is still enough that I can find it when I put a heavy wire down the fill plug. It looks like plain old heavy gear oil to me, but I'm not sure. It that correct?
How near to being full should the two speed gear box be? Is it necessary that it be nearly competely full, or is about half full enough?
Once again, Thanks, Allen | | | | | Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 586 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 586 | Hey Allen,The double reduction rear end(2 speed) takes between 11 to 14 1/2 plus pints of 80-90(mill spec is 2105-c)gear oil initially. The front plug is for filling the system so as to bring gear oil to the two front pinion bearings right away if the system were dry as in new or just overhauled. The gear oil will drain back toward the rear cover if overfilled. For normal service, the oil is checked at the rear plug as any(most)rears would be.I blew my high range and had to overhaul it last year. What a big boy with 6:13(high range)and 8:10(low range)ratios.Hope this helps!

Nothing has been done to the rear, so if I understand you correctly, I would just check the rear plug and ignore the front one. If the rear plug shows a normal amount of oil then I would be ok. Do you agree?
I am leaking oil at the front of the 2 speed where the drive shaft connects. It only leaks after I have moved the truck. I didn't understand that until now, but I suppose the oil drains to the rear when the truck is sitting which means there is oil to the front only when the truck is moving. Is that correct? Thanks Allen | | | | | Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 586 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 586 | Yes,Just check the gear oil level in the rear plug on the cover.Full, when it runs out on your head!Sounds like you will need a pinion seal. Not a bad job.Just take your time. The seal part # from Napa is 49429.If you want to remove the cover to look inside and see all those BIG GEARS, a clean pizza box makes good gasket material for the cover gasket.Use RTV sealant with it and don't overtighten the bolts.Good Luck

Might have to give it a try on the 350. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2003 Posts: 608 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2003 Posts: 608 | GMCpanel I think gTow is talking about a regular pizza box thats flat 1ply cardboard not the corrugated style, Works purty good for alot of things. regards | | | | | Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 9 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 9 | i like to use the boxes that a case of cold beer comes in
