The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Driveline speedometer still but odometer works

I have a 1948 3100 original truck. The speedometer recently started making a screeching noise so I unhooked the speedo cable and used white lithium grease to lube the cable. When I hooked it back up, the speedometer started moving up to about 10-15 mph then dropped back down and never moved again. The odometer is working fine so I'm assuming its not a cable problem but a speedometer gear problem? Do I need to replace the whole unit or can I replace the gears? or is there another fix to try? Thanks so much!

Somewhere at sometime I posted information on how to clean and oil the AD speedometer head and I've posted under separate headings how to use the waterslide decal templates I have provided to renew the numerals (and set those to any mileage needed in case you have to replace one). There will be a post also on how to repair a broken speedometer shaft (very common if somebody isn't careful removing the needle). Just a few weeks ago I sold one I had rebuilt. I think these posts were all in the "Interiors" section. Your speedometer may be suffering a few different problems but my first guess is that it is sticking and needs cleaning and lubrication.
