Quick question for my sheet metal work that I'm documenting in the project journals (restoring the basketcase). I'm working on the outer cowl panel and there was/is a ton of lead body filler on the joint with the upper cowl. I used a torch to remove most of the lead, but I don't seem to be able to get down to completely bare steel. Is there some specific technique that I can use to get completely bare steel, suitable for welding on or should I try to make my welds from inside the cab? I really want to use the holes created by drilling out the spot welds, but am concerned about residual lead contaminating the weld. If you're really paranoid, wear some sort of charcoal filtered respirator to avoid breathing any vaporized lead fumes that might be be created by the welding procedure.
