I purchased an 88 Chevy altenator for the 48 chevy Loadmaster, 1 1/2 ton truck.
What should I do next?
I have one power wire that comes off the post that should go to the battery. But the other two wires that are comming off the plug, I'm not so sure about. I do know that I should install a 12 volt coil but I need some help on the rest of the Installation

Thanks for any input!

The three wire alternator is fairly simple to connect.

The power wire goes to the supply side of the ammeter.

The other heavy wire is the voltage sensing wire and should be connected near your load. (I would suggest connecting it to the other side of the ammeter)

The small wire is the exciter for the alternator. It should be connected to the ignition switch "on" terminal. You could also use this wire for a "dummy" light. To do this you wire the small wire from the alternator to one side of the fillament and the other side to the ignition "on" terminal. (the lamp must not be grounded)

When the key is on without the alternator turning power from the ignition goes through the bulb to ground at the alternator and lights the bulb. Wwhen the alternator begins to charge, both sides of the filament are "hot" and the light goes out.

I read somewhere that if you do not use a "dummy" light, you should put a 30 ohm resistor in the exciter wire to prevent frying the internal regulator. (the light provides the resistance when it is used)
