on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Sep 2005 Posts: 23 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Sep 2005 Posts: 23 | I replaced the Points and set them at .022. I Rebuilt the Carb and Fuel pump, The plugs, Condencer, Dis cap are new. I don't have a working Timing light so I have been turning the distributer until it pop's to set the timming. I will recheck the Points setting but I not sure what else I can do for the beast! The Motor is a 1950 235ci. I did check the vacume advance and it seems to be working fine. I did replace the gaskets on the intake and exhaust a week ago and I did remember to put the rings back in the intake port, but only after I assembled it on the first go around. I smells like it's a little rich on fuel, but I have one hell of an exhaust leak on the exhaust collector.
Thanks for any input on the issue.

I'm having a similar (but not identical) problem with my truck. I've received a lot of help from the guys in the driveline shop. There might be a few nuggets you can use there. Here is a link to the help they've given me over the past 2 weeks: http://www.stovebolt.com/bboard/cgi-bin//ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=009979

A coil that's going bad will start to exhibit problems under load and at high RPMs, resulting in the symptoms you describe.

(At least that's where they're supposed to be on a 216, and the ignition isn't THAT different between the two.)
My points were set to about .24 when I got the truck, and she was doing the same thing. After replacing, plugs, wires, and the condenser, I went in there with a feeler gauge and set the points at .18 (per the shop manual) and I was golden. Runs like a sewing machine.
Try it at .20, since the points are new, and if it still does it, try bringing them down to .18. If that doesn't do it, Try putting new plug wires on it. You may have one that doesn't work. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 258 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 258 | Too wide a point gap will affect ignition timing, as well as cause other issues...
If new points, go with .019" or .020"; if used point, try .016" - .018".
Also, make sure the carb is getting adequate fuel at higher speeds; sometimes curd in the fuel system will allow enough fuel for decent idling, but not enough for higher-speeds or running under load.
Good luck !

I was shocked! Now I can trave hiway speeds. Thanks for the input on the Gap that helped a BUNCH!!!!! I did not relize that I could go down on the gap size. Now I need to work on the Exhaust leak, it's smoken up the cab.
Later!!!!!!!!!!!!
