Question two - what would be the starting grit to sand down first and second coats of filler? and then to smooth-and blend in in afterward?

Perhaps - outline what sanding steps you take to smooth out a roof and back of a cab?

Roughing out filler, I use 80 grit. 220 for smoothing, and then 400 or finer for final sanding before paint.

There's plain back, self-stick, and hook and loop types. I used to use 40 grit for roughing out filler and 80 to 320 grit for progressively smoother finish work.
