Can someone explain to me why paint thinner eat's cast aluminum? I bought an old pressurized paint pot and the agitator paddle's have been eaten down to almost nothing.

Are you sure it wasn't water that ate the paddles, and not paint thinner? Aluminum doesn't like alkaline conditions. Maybe someone used some trisodium phosphate solution to clean it out. TSP solution is very caustic (alkaline) with a pH of 12-14.

I have a couple of older paint pots I was using to clean brushes and had left some paint thinner in them (not Lacquer thinner, but paint thinner, like mineral spirits.) Mine looks all etched inside as well, come to think of it, so does the one I use for painting and keep lacquer thinner in it.
