I have a bottom seat spring that came with my truck, loosely placed in. I don't think it is the right one for the truck. the front portion of the frame hangs down. I can't see any way that it will set in the seat base. Is there some trick to it or is it incorrect?

Can’t tell if it is the original but it looks like it may be .the back gets pushed to tight to the back of the frame then the part I circled hooks on the bar on the frame .
The portion you circled seems to be correct with the $1000 (!!!!) spring set I saw online, but there doesn't seem to be the "bent up" portion at the very front. That is what gets in the way of the springs setting flat on the base.

Look at redline series update 43 1950 chev truck .it is a series we’re they repair a chev truck and episode 43 shoes the seat .here are a few snapshots of the video .Looks like it is different .
You can take the brackets off of the old seat as they look the same and maybe find a newer seat that will fit in the frame until you come across a original one if you want it origional. Here is one off the net that looks like it has a newer truck seat . Search truck seat on the site and there should be a few people that posted what they used .
The Redline Series was helpful. I will assume there is no difference (or not much anyway) with the 1950 springs and the 1954 springs. I clearly have something different. I am tempted to cut off the front that protrudes down, but I would sure like to know what mine really came off of. BTW, the seat back set in and looks like it is right.

I just realized this is under the panel and burb section ,I take it your truck is a pickup if so i would think it is going to move to the interior section.
