If this is what is found on the back of the engine block towards the starter, what does it tell me about this engine or truck?

Does that number match the number on the title?

The title is unfortunately long lost. I will be going through the Texas bonded title process. However, the paperwork that does exist tends to support the idea that this isn’t the original engine. That’s why I’m trying to figure out what engine this is.

What's the engine installed in? That might help narrow down the search.

You can check the block casting number here and narrow down the year.

The engine is in a 1953 Chevy 5-window 1/2 ton 3100.

216? 235? Can you provide a pic of the motor? pic of the valve cover?

The truck is at my buddy's house in Florida (I live in Texas). I've bought it from him and he's going to trailer it to me when my garage is finally built. I'm getting anxious to get the truck and the garage construction is going to take longer than I expected. I may get the truck sooner since I'm impatient, but in the meantime I only have a few photos. The longer version of the story is that he purchased it about five or six years ago as a "retirement project" at that time he lived four doors away from me and I tried to buy it from him back then. In the past five years he hasn't touched it and finally decided to sell it to me since he knows I will get it running.

To my eye it is a 216 since the valve cover attaches to the engine via two nuts at the top and no visible nuts along its sides.

The number stamped on the engine is not a factory number, it could be from an engine rebuilding company for warranty tracking. I doubt it was put there by a State...if they issued a "new" vin for some reason it would have bee affixed to the body, not the engine.

Engine casting number found down low at the front of the block on the passenger side will be your best bet for identifying what you have.

I was beginning to suspect an engine rebuild. Among the papers that my buddy sent was a receipt from the prior owner for 6 new pistons (L2033/060) if that means anything. There was also a receipt for a valve job. I have the serial number from the A pillar.

The A pillar serial may or may not mean anything as back in 1953 many States were still using the engine serial number for identification/titling purposes.

Yep, that's why I'm curious to know more about the engine since my buddy is fairly certain that its not the original engine in this truck. I will work with him to get photos of the engine block casting numbers.

We found the engine casting number, see attached picture, its 3759365 which seems to indicate that its a 261 engine from 1958-62.

thumbs_up The 261 is a step above a 235, so you've scored on that account.

Another clue that it's not a 216 is that the pushrod cover doesn't go up past the spark plugs to the rocker cover.
