Just curious if anyone has used or had experience using a laser cleaner for surface rust? Looks great on the videos but you know how that goes.Real or Joke?

I've been eyeing those as well, but am skeptical, since it's promoted on the internet.
I'm wondering if those videos are speeded up to make it look faster than it really is. ohwell

$40 to $50 grand! Doesn't make sense economically for most of us...

The ones I've seen advertised on the web are priced under $50. Quite a difference (and likely a big difference in performance.) That's why I'm skeptical. Next time it pops up, I'll try to post a link. The ad says orders over $50 ship free.

$50 ????????? Don't think so. Rental??? Don't think so. $60,000 buys a lot of Evaporust. 2142.8 gallons to be exact.

That sounds like a business investment versus home hobby/backyard mechanic. I seriously think I saw that it ships from China. We must recognize at that point that foreign countries don’t have US rules and regulations. Buyer beware!

Can't agree more. I did the raised eyebrow thing when I saw the link I mentioned. And yes it said under $50. I think it was very likely a scam or junk.

Interesting thread. I didn't know how much these things cost. In the name of research grin I g o o gled "laser rust cleaning gun" then clicked on "shopping". You can get them priced from $100 up to many thousands. I doubt the $100 model is option heavy. grin

Here's the ad I've seen. It just popped up again tonight.

All I have to say is Caveat Emptor. But if a couple of guys want to experiment and get the free shipping offer by buying two and report on it, that would be awesome.

I have used the 50k versions and they work really well. The $50 ones are almost cheap enough to buy just to see what it is.

Looking online, it looks like if you order the fullsatisfy laser, you get a star of David necklace. They send it so there is a tracking number to give the credit card company as "proof" you recieved your item.

Taking Kevin's link and scrolling down to the list of characteristics, #2 says output spot size is 4mm. If that means the working size cleaning area is 4mm by default that will take a LONG time to clean anything. 4mm is just over 1/8".

I have always found that you get what you pay for! If it’s ridiculously cheap, it’s more than likely a scam!

Hmm, 4mm (.1574"). Yep, that would take a while to clean any large surface, but I was thinking about nicks and crannies on sheet metal where its darned difficult to properly clean. If it actually worked that would be a neat tool to have. I'm skeptical because the photos provided indicate a very large laser footprint on the items "cleaned". I read all 10 reviews and came away with the impression they were "fabricated" due to the word usage and order. Too good to be true? Yes I think so. Then again, it could be very useful for some very specific cleaning requirements if it actually works.

I didn't dig that deep into it, but suspected the videos they have up front were fabricated. I wasn't going to order one, because they'd charge a zillion dollars to ship it up here (~62 lb.) But I have blown in $50 on experiments before.

Thanks for digging into the "fine print", guys. I also was suspect about the "reviews". Most of them didn't even say anything of substance.

$5.99 flat rate shipping to US! 62 lbs, really! WOW! I checked several scam websites and there was more than 10 reviews that stated they ordered the laser cleaner from “Fullsatisify”, and received either a cheap necklace or nothing at all with no way to contact them, so this is a total scam!

37gc In another life I worked in a diesel shop that had a huge caustic tank that we brought to a boil,it would really cut the gunk off of stuff. It was slow,we needed something faster for head work so built a much smaller 2ft x 3.5 ft. tank. It would heat up while your gutting and scraping the heads. Our local oilfield supply has caustic soda like you use in those tanks. That would be reasonable in price.

I worked on Lasers that burned perforation holes in acetate filters. They work great but they need periodic expensive maintainance to keep them going. They work by evaporating most anything near the focal point of the beam. Same principle as seen in the video. Unfornutately things that get in the way like fingers and eyeballs can be evaporated as well. The material being evaporated may emit a gas so one should do their research in case the gas is toxic. Glass, glass-like materials and mirrors can pass or reflect the beam so Laser safety goggles are needed (eyes concentrate light and can burn from the inside). In the video I could see differences (depth of burn) when the laser was making a pass. Probably handheld. For more precision a holding fixture is needed that would insure the same distance between the laser and target are maintained. The warranty is only 2 years on the cabinet and 1 year on the fiber laser. One would hope the seller/manufacturer would supply refurbished swap-out parts at a disount to keep the laser working.

It's all about the wattage, if they are stating it correctly

It is less about wattage than energy density. A 40W beam that is 7mm diameter will only slightly warm a piece of paper. That same beam focused to a 0.1mm spot will cut through 5mm hardwood.

Sure, the wattage is an important part of that equation, but only a part of it.

Thanks guys. That was fun, I knew the 50 dollar unit must be a joke or scam, but thought somewhere between the $50 and 50K there was something actually usable and someone that had used one. Evaporrust and the wire wheel for me! as for shipping I have bought phone screen protectors on Ebay for .79 and free shipping...How can they do that from China?
