I was thinking of painting my firewall and later i will paint the truck . the paint shop suggested acrilic urathane. My daugerter wants the truck to be kipton green like the new 2018 camaros. Do i need a special gun and what size Tip should I use? Also the paint has a slite metalic to it.I have painted soild colors with the gun I have and it came out good.

29Tons - When you purchase the paint, they should give you a Technical Data Sheet that will provide what size tip is recommended, same goes for primers, etc... If they don't give you one, ask for one. Also you can go online and search and find technical data sheets for most popular paints. I'm no expert myself, just an amateur, but I like the gravity HVLP type guns.

Do you mean Krypton Green and acrylic urethane?

I was a kid when I worked in a body shop so take what I say with a little seasoning.

The paint would not be original so, in my humble opinion, spray the firewall a good generic black.
That way if the green is regretted later on at least you don't have to redo the firewall.
It's difficult to keep overspray off an engine, wires, cables, hoses and other parts.

Also you need a good experienced body man to spray the truck. Solids are easier but metallic paint, especially on big rounding fenders, can run (collected metallic particles) that can be seen (the reflection) by the eye even though the surface is smooth. Maybe modern paint today doesn't have that problem. If it runs, you can try to let it dry up to maximum limit, then spray another coat. Fingers crossed it doesn't run again.

When I was a lot younger and painting I would keep a couple of marbles or bearings in the gun and that would
help keep the metallic from settling. However I haven't painted in a few years

I like the look of a painted firewall. The SPI (southern polyurethane inc ) forum is a great resource for paint. Not sure what year truck you have but the running board apron on AD truck has been my practice piece.

Im working on a 41 Chevy coe its going to be a pickup body on the back also will be a hot rod so not being an original color is not a problem. I sprayed a metalic paint in the 80s and was having a problem with the metalic getting stripes in the paint. I have heard of putting steel balls in the paint gun when i used a suction style gun but with a hvlp gun wouldnt that clog the hole up were the paint to goes through?

Spraying metallic paints is more technique than the separation of the flakes. Watch a few YouTube videos and practice on a few panels before you attempt spraying your truck.

It would depend on the size of the steel balls.

I've used marbles for the same affect.
