The adjustment screw has been tighten all the way down. Instead of rebuilding the old steering box I'm just going replace it with a remanufactured one from Summit. I've seen seen a few videos on you tube but the fender and hood have been removed. I've got a couple of questions. 1, Do I have to remove body parts to remove steering box?
2, Will I have to put truck on a lift or raise the front end to get at the bolts and to remove the box?

All the bolts are reasonably accessible , but threading it out once it's disconnected would be a bit of a chore and might be easier with the hood removed.
A lift would be handy for sure. I don't know if it'll come out thru the hood opening as I removed mine after I had removed the whole front clip.

You do have to remove the 2-piece support saddle inside where it bolts to the bottom of the dash, and it really helps to remove the floor plate where the column comes through. Sliding the floor plate up and off the column gives you a lot of play to maneuver the column under the hood and take it out. The floor plate doesn't really offer any support anyway....more for keeping stuff out. This is provided you are taking the complete unit out.
The bolts holding the steering box on the frame rail are accessible without moving anything also. (I didn't say 'easily' accessible, but they are accessible).
I installed a rebuilt complete unit about a year after my restoration was finished. Wasn't that much to it. Mine is a 1951 3100, should be pretty much the same as a 1949.
