Was replacing axle bearings, pulled the cross pin from the differetial to get the c- clips out and the washer behind one of the spider gears fell out and for the life of me I can't get it to go back in. I was wondering if I can pull the plates with the springs with out removing the ring gear? Or do I need to take the whole thing apart? The 12 bolt came out of a 76 nova I think.

The spider washers will NOT slip in after the gears are in position. The washer (spacer) is stuck to the back of the spider and then both are rolled into position at the same time. You can remove the spring pack IF you can compress the springs till two halves are tight against each other and fasten them there. I used a dot of brass to hold till back in place and then just heated one dot. When one dot melted WHAM the other broke and the spring pack was in place. I don't think a 12 bolt was offered in 1976 but was in 66-67 with the 350hp 327 and in the late 60's big blocks.

It sure is strange that it can fall out on it's own but I can't get it back in. That's just the way my luck goes

Had a good day today. Put the truck in park rotated the wheels far enough to turn the plate and spiders and whoo-la the washer slipped in. Next time I will be more carefull and make sure everything stays in place. But at my age there probably won't be a next time. I hope.
