i messed with my rear hubs tonight hoping to inspect my bearings and figured after reading about it here it would be easy. pull the cap and take of the little nut, then the big nut, right. mine has no nuts. well it does but not a nut you could use a socket on. they are sloted things you use a screwdriver and hammer on. and before you get to those, you have to pull the axle out. there are pics in the folder about brakes following the link below. i moved to webshots, they let ya have more pictures so the link in some of my old post to the pictures won't work any longer. can anyone tell what rear end i have from these pics?

There were a few others out there workin' on brakes and such. Let's get some discussiongoin' for Awier.

All I can tell you is it's different than my 4400. So it has to be a two ton truck rear. That should be all you need to know to get parts for it. Everytime I order parts for mine I tell them it's a 1 1/2 ton truck and they get me the correct parts each time.

As far as I can tell, its the standard axle used in the 6000 series trucks, with full floating hub and what they call the "twinplex four anchor" type brakes, which were first used in '51. This applies to both single- and two-speed axles. The 1-1/2 ton trucks had the same setup, but the GAWR is 2000 lbs. lower.

Have you checked the axle serial number to see if it's the original? The number is stamped on top of the carrier.

A note about the brake return springs on the twinplex setup. According to the '52 supplement to the '48-'51 shop manual, "the identification and proper installation of the brake shoe pull back springs...is of utmost importance." There is a nice diagram in the manual.
