57 Chevy 3800 235ci 4 spd trans during drill test of cable speedometer and odometer works as it should but not when connected to trans. Where do I check next?

Duwop, in the drill test was the drill hooked up to the trans end of the speedo cable? Probably a stupid question but just trying to rule the cable itself out as the culprit.

Cable might just be too short when installed.

Yes drill hooked to trans end of cable, sorry about the delay in response as I’ve been researching more info. The following is what I’ve come up with
I’ve got sm420 trans but not sure about date codes matching my 57 truck(see pic)
I’ve got a 13 tooth speedometer drive gear my rear axle ratio should be 5.14:1 as per specs in manual any information you can provide would be of help

I would disconnect the cable from the speedo and see if it spins while driving.

I spent days when I was younger trying to find the same problem. The replacement inner cable was to short. Finally bought the cable and casing, success! Doc

Doc.Hall, so I looked at the cable after your post and it appeared that the cable connection at the speedometer was broke and possibly short. I ordered a new cable and installed it and went for a drive to put some gas in it to test the new fuel gauge and sending unit. The speedometer is working though it’s about 3-5 mph behind gps.
So for now that is close enough for me. Thank you very much for your suggestions
