old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 346 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 346 | Recently bought this rear axle for installation in my '38 ton and a half whenever I get around to picking up that project. Width across the axle flanges is 66.5". Weight rating is 11,000 lbs. Gear ratio is 4.63. Wheel bolt circle is 10 on 7.25", wheel hub pilot is 5.25" in diameter. It is a Dana 80 from a '99 1/2 GM truck according to the assembly numbers on it. The Dana websight has Parts Lists and Service Manuals on line for it. This rear end appears to be popular with the 4 wheeling crowd so there are lots of parts/tools available for it. Motorhome / 3500HD rear axle

Do a search on this site for Dana 70HD. I did a similar swap on my truck, you will find some pictures and discussion about it.

I'm thinking of adapting front spindles and brakes from the same vintage truck to the front axle. Another bolter here (Winky) has had it done so I know it's possible.
Sorry about the delay getting back, I'm on the road for work again.

The spring perch for rear axle was cut off and moved out about 1/2 inch, still has room for brake lines. Old rims can be used by changing center hole.New wheels look just as good.Hard core might see the difference. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 926 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 926 | Winky, how'd you do your front brakes? Were you able to keep the stock axle,or did you have to adapt the newer one in? | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 . | | . Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 | As you may know I adapted an entire front axle. But I was at a truck show yesterday and saw one with adapted spindles with the old I-beam, disc brakes all the way around. E-mail me and I can send you a few pictures of the truck at the show. I took spindles from p30 and axel to shop for new kingpins he rebushed to fit.I have lots of picts I posted before, search should turn them up,if you cant find let me know I will post again.I think it cost about 500 bucks for machine work, spindles, kingpins. new tie rods are needed [take from p30 ] shorten cross tube on passenger side,it has right hand threads. | | |
