I'm looking at a '50 GMC. Anyone know how to tell the difference between a 228, 248 and 270. I've been trying to read through threads on this and other websites and in some cases it says that all 3 were available in 1950 in others, OldGMTrucks, it shows only the 228 and 270 available that year. The 248 doesn't show up until '53. I'm trying to find out the casting numbers. Hopefully that will help.

Hy JoeR, on the machined pad to the rear of the distributor there should be an engine serial number stamped there, on American engines the first three digits indicate the engines cubic inch displacement, hope that helps.

'37 GMC T-18 w/ DD 4-53T, RTO-610, 6231 aux., '95 GMC running gear, full disc brakes, power steering, 22.5 wheels and tires.
'47 GMC 1 ton w/ 302, NP-540, 4wd, full width Blazer front axle.
'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed.
'55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.
