A 1957 suburban does not have back up lights. Just tail lights. I have had many of them. If you have the original tail lights, take off the lens and you will see the screws that hold the housing to the truck. Tinnerman and screw combo. If you have some sort of "back up" lights, post pix. I think I see lights below your tail lights. Someone has added those from some other vehicle. Have you taken the lens of of those yet? You need to learn to explore things like that by taking things apart. Also, your fender emblems are on backwards.

Yes I have taken the lens off and wondered if one of the previous owners put the lights on. It has a knob turn switch on the dash that looks original. Will post a pics tomorrow. What picture are you looking at ? I installed a new engine the other day and still have the fenders off. Thanks.

So anyway, there is no original knob for back up lights because there were no back up lights. Has your question about how to remove the light been answered? .,,,,,or figured out?????

I learned early on in my mechanical dealings that I wanted to see how something worked, I would take it apart. Unfortunately, it took a couple of whippings to remember to put it back together before my father caught me. Per your question, I would assume that there are a couple of studs coming out the back side of the "back up light" housings. I'd poke and prod until I found a couple of nuts that are in about the right place. If you like having the lights, I would just leave them be for now, same as the switch to turn them on and off. If the switch looks "original", then it has probably been there for a long time and should be kept. Of course that is your choice, not mine or anyone elses.

According to Jim Carter, the 55-56 Suburban tailgate light could be fitted with a factory backup light per this pic. The switch was mounted to the shift linkage on the column. Can't find that option for 57-59. That original light and it's original switch can be found on the same isle as the chicken lips and hens teeth.

Ended up drilling the flat headed mounting bolts. I don't plan on using the lights someone installed them with the hitch. It's a 4 speed SM-420 transmission which as no reverse switch. Removed the rear wiring harness and found the scabed in wire running from the dash to the lights. Thanks for your lesson on the no back up lights. They have been on the suburban since I bought it in 1974.
