| | | | Joined: Jan 2020 Posts: 620 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2020 Posts: 620 | My favorite 54-3100 has been restored the second time however; Years ago at about 20.000 miles I adjusted the valves. It has 32,000 miles on it now. For such a simple machine it idle's rough but smooths out at 1,000 rpm. I have a good friend that has forgotten more than I will ever know about antique autos and trucks who is working on it. I had the wrong rotor button in it (from an International 6 cyl) Napa sold me the wrong one. Coil, points ,plugs and condenser are new. It now starts and runs. About 21 years ago I adjusted the valves (I think 16 and12), but I realized the other day while flat on my back that it has solid lifters. Have I ruined anything? Doc

As the valves and seats wear, the clearance decreases, so it wouldn't hurt to start adjusting those valves a little more frequently. We used to do a valve adjustment as part of a tuneup- - - -twice a year or every 10K miles, whichever came first.
