It’s a cover for the top of the transmission.

That was my guess but having never torn into a transmission I was not sure. Does it look like a 3-speed or a 4-speed? Any way to nail down what it fits with no numbers on it?

It's the top cover for the three speed transmission with floor shift.

1940-47 truck 3 speed shift cover. Maybe 1937-47, would need to check parts book.
