I bought a 1952 1-1/2 ton Chevy recently. It has a 235 with an oil bath air filter and Rochester carburetor with a manual choke.

I know the 1/2 ton had a 216 in 1952. What did the 1-1/2 ton have? I thought some of the heavier trucks had low pressure 235s instead. I'm trying to find out if my engine is original.

Thanks for any help on this issue.

I believe you are right that the 235 was used in big trucks before it was used elsewhere. But since this motor is in a 50+ year old truck, you should check the casting and serial numbers to be sure you know what you have.

My '52 has a stock looking motor in it, but my '51 1-1/2 ton has a later motor in it. I've not yet checked numbers to see if they are what I think...

It might be the "boat anchor" low-pressure 235. If you're lucky, it has a later 235 or a 261 in it. There is an article on the big trucks around here: http://www.stovebolt.com/features/bigtrucks/index.htm

the 235 was the original engine that year. i believe by 52 the better engine was used. 48 mph.

Thanks for your help. My 235 (1952 1-1/2 ton) does not have the two acorn nuts but rather four bolts that secure the valve cover around the outside flange. So I guess this means that my 235 is for sure high pressure and not original to the truck. (this truck ran until 10 years ago.)

How can I find the year knowing the block number off the engine adjacent to the distributor?
