Has any one made a bench top work stand for their sm420? I have taken the trans out of the truck while I await the engine rebuild. After cleaning the 50 plus years of grim off of it. I would like to open it up and inspect it. I have an engine stand that I might use. But I was hoping to have something bench mounted. Thanks, Brian

I have seen others that thread into the drain plug using pipe nipples, don’t have a saved pic.

Thanks Brad. I was thinking something more free standing. As to be able to move it around the bench top and or also to rotate it?

When I was building a lot of automatic transmissions I had a piece of pipe bolted to a workbench, and a slip-in bracket that I bolted to the transmission case, with holes and a cross pin that allowed me to position the case at several angles. I also had holding brackets made for several types of 3 speed manual transmissions. It would be fairly simple to fabricate something similar for the SM 420.

Keep in mind an SM420 weighs 135 pounds so if it gets loose...

Here is my low buck setup , works just fine.
Probably gone through at least a dozen sm420s with this setup.

That's too easy, Steve. There has to be a flaw in that design somewhere!

I'm sure there is Tom if you only use one leg instead of the two, haha. Nothing better than cheap and simple.

Thank you to everyone that has posted to this thread. I can see now that I have been WAY OVER thinking this.

I like Craig's stand. You could mount a piece of tempered glass on that and have an interesting end table. I've seen tables made from an engine block with glass top. This could be a good companion table...
