i have a rebuilt 1976 chevrolet 350 small block . new edelbrock 4
barrel carburetor and automatic choke electronic ignition regular horse power no custom stuff standard transmission , starts quick when the engine is cold however after after the engine is warmed up [30 minutes driving ] turn the engine off to make a quick stop at a store . it takes some hard cranking to start the engine again ? thank you 1pete1

Hold your gas pedal to da floor when that happens. See if that helps.

Sounds like percolation. Too much heat under the carburetor making the fuel hot.

If you can find non-ethanol gas in your area, try a tank and see if it helps. Also with a Eldebrock I'd run a spacer under the carb to help reduce the heat gain that causes percolation. Something like this.

When you say "hard cranking" what do you mean?

If the static ignition timing is just a little too fast the starter may make a "grunting" sound while trying to crank the engine. If it does this, retard the timing just a little until it will turn over easy.

If it cranks fine but simply not firing up then could be carb is flooding the engine while it is sitting. Is there a thick gasket between the intake manifold and the base of the carb? That might help a little with heat transfer issues to the carb.

1pete1 Look at your timing system are advance weights sticky? initial timing set right,TDC mark in the right place,does it smoke black when it does fire-up,carb insulation might help (thick gasket),is it carboned-up,slap a double handful of ice on the fuel pump if its in the open might tell you something,starter bushings well worn can let the armerature bow enough to rub on the fields in a hard cranker,if the valve guides are alittle tight mighthurt hot starting !
