Did the muncie 4 speed transmission come painted from the factory? Is so, what color.

I've never found any paint on an SM-420, they have always been bare cast iron under the grease and oil.

If I was restoring one I'd either paint it semi gloss black or cast iron gray. The gear shift lever (cane) would be black.

oops - I deleted incorrect info - thanks for the "heads up", Mike.

I dimly recall that the SM420 was painted black on my 54/55 GMC Z-Series 350 COE (but, it might have been real dirty and it might have been a replacement transmission)?

Some oldGMCtrucks members indicated that replacement transmissions might have been a different color than an original-equipment SM420.

Sorry about my incorrect-information link.

Tim, the OP was asking about transmission colors, not engine color...

As far as i know, the trans itself was not painted, the only part that was painted would have been the pto, red was one brand and black was another, muncie and chelsea i believe.

PTO's were aftermarket and installed by the dealer/owner for their intended use, so they have no bearing on what color the trans should be.

Our 1956 6400 4 speed does not appear to have been painted. I don't know if it is original, but guess that it is. The engine was probably a dealer replacement as it has no serial number, and January 1958 casting. Also, the block and head are unpainted, but oil pan, valve cover, and side cover are yellow.
