That looks like the mid-late '50s style that was common on passenger car 235s, so I'm thinking it probably came with the later 235. Image attached is from the '57 car assembly drawings. Having said that, no reason it wouldn't work on a 216 that I know.
Thanks, I was thinking it came with the later 235 implant. Although my 235 was a Truck engine not from a car. I'll have to keep my eye out for a proper air cleaner.
Post an ad in the Swap Meet, someone may have an extra. They appear with some regularity on eBay but are pretty pricey at times. The open element type can run as high as $200 on some listings so be aware.
Just to add here, the 55-56 car air cleaners were a clamp type cleaner and the carbs for those motors did not have the cross bar and stud arrangement that the 57 and later carbs did. In 57, the pass car had a lower hood profile then did the 55-56 so instead of the clamp on the air cleaner, there is a recessed area on the top of the cleaner for a stud and wing nut and the carb has a cross bar for a stud. This set up helped get the lower profile hood to fit.
