I have 1951 Chevy 6400 stake body (2ton) 4 speed transmission. I want to convert it into a dump bed utilizing parts from the era. I recently found for sale a 1953 Chevy Silverado 3500.
My question is: from the 3500 can I use the pto and everything related to that dump truck (hydraulic pump, etc) and bolt it on to my 6400?
I believe the GVW of a 6400 is greater than a 3500, correct me if I am wrong, so if you keep the weights within limits you should be OK. Your 420 should drive PTO OK. Get out your scale and verify fit.

'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed. '55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.
The PTO needs to be a SAE 6-Bolt with internal gears to match your existing SM-420. All of the other parts should bolt on as long as the frames are the same width. I'm not familiar with a 1953 Silverado 3500...what trans does it have?

I deleted the other one. Mike B is on the right track. The rest of us ... who knows?
