Posting this for a friend. 1949 5 window, 235. Wants to take out original tranny and enclosed drive line. Will a 1972 4 speed crawler bolt up to bell housing? If not what year tranny's will work to gain on highway speed and take out enclosed drive shaft. Thanks for any help with this.

420 and 465 are direct in high, T-5’s have several gear sets available with OD, important to get proper gear set to match use, existing gear ratio, tire size, loads hauled, mountains or not, etc.

Easy conversion

The T-5 5 speed from an S-10 pickup or Camero is the best way to go. There is gobs of info on this swap in this website. Do a search & look in theTech-tips.

I finished my resto of a 37 last spring and did do a t-5 install so I am familiar with putting one in. Had a new rear end built with 350 ratio so goes down the road real nice. I will try to talk my friend into t-5 but not sure if he will do it. As I asked in my first post will a 72 tranny bolt up easily to a 49 235? I am Not sure what a 420 or 465 trans. are. I think he has a 72 on hand and would like to install it. Thanks for any and all help..Bill

SM420 and SM465 are Chevy truck trannys. (4 speed, shifter on top, granny 1st gear). Neither one will make it go faster ad they are straight through on 4th gear. Novaks has a lot of info for identifying your trans. Below is a link to the SM465, which was used in 1972 in 4 speed trucks with the granny 1st gear

The mounting pattern is the same from 48 up but the SM465 trans has a larger diameter bearing retainer which will not match up with the center hole in the 49 bellhousing.

The SM 420 was used from 48 to 67. The SM465 was used from 68 to about early 90,s. with various changes.
The only way you can decrease the engine rpm at highway speeds is an o-drive trans. or higher gear rear end.

This is outside of my limited area of experiences - so please excuse my ignorance/boldness in asking the following questions, and, please excuse my ignorance in offering some suggestions. If the questions/information posted below are incorrect and/or are totally "off base", I will delete this post.

Will you have a 1958-1964 10 bolt rear end?

If yes, do you want to convert it to a 3.55 Ring & Pinion gear set?

If yes, might the items in the next two links be helpful?

- 3.55 R & P set
- 3.55 R & P installation parts-set

The owner is putting in a newly built fo#d 9" from John's Industries with a 305 or something near that for gears. Also new drive shaft to match up to the sm465.
The truck is at John's and they are doing the install. Thanks for all the info with this. Bill

With rear gears that high and a 1:1 (direct drive) SM-465 I'm not sure the 235 will be up to the task.

Originally that truck would have had 4.10 rear with 1:1 transmission and the 235 worked well. Essentially the only thing you've changed is the rear to 3.05 and now the engine is way underpowered.

Ford 9” diffs. are easy to switch, might be worthwhile to look for an optional ratio to try switching out to get optimum ratio, loaner from diff. shop?

I'm glad that this is not my project! As I said I finished my 37 resto with t-5 and am very happy. 1800 rpm at 55 mph..350 rear gears
