Wants to take out original tranny and enclosed drive line. Will a 1972 4 speed crawler bolt up to bell housing? If not what year tranny's will work to gain on highway speed and take out enclosed drive shaft. Thanks for any help with this.

There is gobs of info on this swap in this website. Do a search & look in theTech-tips. George They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Had a new rear end built with 350 ratio so goes down the road real nice. I will try to talk my friend into t-5 but not sure if he will do it. As I asked in my first post will a 72 tranny bolt up easily to a 49 235? I am Not sure what a 420 or 465 trans. are. I think he has a 72 on hand and would like to install it. Thanks for any and all help..Bill

(4 speed, shifter on top, granny 1st gear). Neither one will make it go faster ad they are straight through on 4th gear. Novaks has a lot of info for identifying your trans. Below is a link to the SM465, which was used in 1972 in 4 speed trucks with the granny 1st gear https://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/transmissions/manual/sm465 | | | | Joined: Jan 2018 Posts: 294 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2018 Posts: 294 | Thank you for the info. The SM465 was used from 68 to about early 90,s. with various changes. The only way you can decrease the engine rpm at highway speeds is an o-drive trans. or higher gear rear end. If the questions/information posted below are incorrect and/or are totally "off base", I will delete this post. Will you have a 1958-1964 10 bolt rear end? If yes, do you want to convert it to a 3.55 Ring & Pinion gear set? If yes, might the items in the next two links be helpful? - 3.55 R & P set- 3.55 R & P installation parts-set | | | | Joined: Jan 2018 Posts: 294 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2018 Posts: 294 | The owner is putting in a newly built fo#d 9" from John's Industries with a 305 or something near that for gears. Also new drive shaft to match up to the sm465. The truck is at John's and they are doing the install. Thanks for all the info with this. Bill

Originally that truck would have had 4.10 rear with 1:1 transmission and the 235 worked well. Essentially the only thing you've changed is the rear to 3.05 and now the engine is way underpowered.
