Joined: Apr 2002 Posts: 2,168 | I had to completely disassemble mine when it started bouncing around the gauge. It wasn’t the cable, it was the lube on the gears inside. It was 70 years old, crusty, hard, and of course it was causing the needle to skip and jump all over the place, not to mention making a terrible grinding sound to boot.

My speedo cable was new so I didn’t lube it. I have heard guys use graphite lube or pour thinned gear oil down the coil. I haven’t tried this and would wonder if any gear lube would be thrown outward near the ends?

I never tried his snake oil but I thought it would be something thin to work when its cold. My 51 6400 speedo was not working ,had a cable so oiled it put it in speed works miles work 2 speed axle box works. Only trouble is hand rubs on the glass but it will fight its way up there. I felt like thats pretty good for 70 year old equipment ! | | |
