I am in the process of replacing with patch panels the passenger and driver side front floor. I noticed when I cut out the passenger front panel that it cut into the transmission cover support below the floor. After replacing with new floor panel does it need to be reinforced or simply go with the new panels and drill holes for the on the floor transmission cover plate. The old support looks like 17 gauge 1/2 inch angle iron
I rebuilt those support angles with 18 gauge steel sheet. Not that hard to do. I had the originals to make a pattern. The hardest part was forming the step to account for the depression for the transmission cover (picture attached). Also a pic one of them installed with the replacement floor. I left the old ones in place until the replacement floor panel was tacked in to maintain the location of the bend between the floor and toe panel.
I would NOT leave them out.
