| | | | Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 1,703 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 1,703 | well i put the juice to the ol gal this mornin after near a year on drydock ..Carb been settin on the shelf dry .had some gas squirtin outta the floats an stuff but a few taps with a plastic hammer settled that down quick ...I had some backfires an such as i was adjustin the timin an she smoothed out alot ...gonna just let her set overnight with fuel in it to get everything that should be wet with gas get wet ...an try again tomorrow ..
my ? is how do ya know if ya blew the power valve on onna them ?

Back in February I bought a 350 HO crate engine with the same carb for my 51 which will be sitting dry (never run) until January/Spring 2008. Do I need to do anything to preserve this carb, 30 weight, WD40, gear grease, cosmoline?

You should not any probs as yours has never had any fuel in it and as long as you keep it outta the moisture it should be just fine till you are ready , mine had 30,000 miles on it when i pulled the carb off and drained the gas outta it an put it on the shelf for a yr .

Holley 600 Seriously, the most prominent sign of a blown power valve will be very bad performance. Like chugging, hesitating, bucking... Real hard to drive. If the carb is off the engine -- I'm most familiar with the 4160 4 BBl -- disassemble the metering block from the float bowl on one side. Extract the power valve from the metering block, Inspect the rubber diaphragm skin: if the skin looks popped, bubbled, or distorted, it's shot. If the diaphragm rubber looks smooth and tight (and has no holes) it's probably good. Some old school hot rod parts shop might still have power valve testers. Or maybe old hands who'll eyeball the power valve for you.
