I'm looking at a 2 ton right now but it doesn't have any kind of bed in the back. Wondering what options you guys have done and has one tried fitting a regular bed say from a 3/4 or 1 ton on one of these. I know the fenders wouldn't fit
Hy Comediann, If we knew the year and the wheelbase of the truck you are considering purchasing we might be able to make suggestions. I think if you are considering a truck that large you might have a purpose in mind for it?
Its a 1954 gmc 350 im sorry I didn't state that. It has no purpose but a project to share with some family. I have my personal truck i want to build and I thought this would be cool to do with some family that need a cool hauler around their property.
On my '46 ton and a half I drilled and chiseled rivets, moved my rear axle forward to approximate the short wheelbase truck and put a long bed pickup bed on instead. I made the bed crossmembers and opened up the fender openings. So it can be done.

A torch would definitely simplify things but I did it with hand tools out in the pasture. I used the bed off a 1951 chevy longbed because it was for sale cheap and had a similar look to the 46 half ton bed in that it had the same angled upper bedsides. It's still shorter than a modern longbed but is still more usable for me than a shortbed.

Bed crossmembers or supports. You can see the large holes on the top which allow a socket to be used to tighten the supports to the frame with 1/2" bolts. The middle support I had to elongate the access holes to tighten the wood bed strip bolts because it is right above a factory crossmember. This could have been avoided but I wanted equal spacing on the bed boards. You can also see why I need to have wheel spacers made...This is a GMC bed which is 2" wider than Chevy. I have 1/2" clearance between tire and bed side. Had I only known before...
I just measured and moved the spring hangers and shackle mounts forward in new holes. I trimmed the fishplate shy of the new hanger location. Used 2x4 steel tube for the crossmembers/ bed supports and drilled 5/16" holes in top for the bed strips and ⅞" (I think) in the bottom to allow a socket access to tighten the strip bolts. I drilled ½" holes thru the bed supports and frame and bolted them down via a larger diameter hole in the top to allow the socket to fit. In the first picture you can see the rust area where the spring mount and overload bracket were and where the new brackets are now. I still need to cut off the back of the frame where it sticks out past the tailgate. The rivits are drilled but there's a bunch of junkpreviously welded on that needs to be cut off before the crossmember can be removed, relocated and reinstalled.

Hi, I have a 57 2 ton ex firetruck. It has a stepside long bed on it. I'm keeping the fenders uncut so it will only have 2 tires on the back. It looks insane but it has grown on me. Viteye
i have a 54 gmc 350 truck, my options were slim to none initially i was just going to mount a gooseneck hitch over the rear end. but luckily enough my father just grabbed an AD truck with a full pto setup he doesnt want so ill be stealing the entire back off his truck for mine. and ill have a shop fab up a mean trailer hitch so i tow a 25ft deck flat utility trailer. just incase my viking breaks down or my fathers AD truck breaks down. but (sorry to get off topic a bit) we will be building him a 1/2 ton style pickup bed for his 1.5 ton going to use longbed sides and shortbed sides to combine into 1 very long bed and widen the fenders so it covers both rear wheels. its going to be pretty cool !
