I have a 1950 3100 with a 261 in it. It is a 12 volt system with a single 1 barrel carb. Sometimes when I turn it off it keeps running for a few seconds. I noticed that it doesn't do this when I have the A/C compressor on. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Check for a vacuum leak. Slow the idle speed adjustment down. If that doesn't solve it install an idle speed solenoid like Panic says.

Dieseling is usually caused by a too-lean idle mixture and too high an idle speed. Go a little richer on the idle mixture screw (counterclockwise), and turn the speed down so you can almost count the fan blades as they turn. Unless you've got a radical camshaft and/or a vacuum leak, the engine should idle down to less than 500 RPM.

If the throttle is not closed all the way, this will occur, idle speed adj. as above.

'55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.
