Is it recommended to change the oil before putting on another 500 miles or so or will it be ok to keep on keeping on ??

The machining procedures and quality control on parts made in the past 50 years or so are far more accurate than the engines we tinker with were when they were brand new. Drive that engine a couple of thousand miles on the oil that's in it now, and start changing the oil and filter at whatever interval you choose- - - -the engine won't care, and it will probably outlast a brand new one from the 1950's.
