So i bought this 47 2 ton. I got it running. Now times for brakes. So i want to go through the entire system. My question is ....there is a hydroboost on there I am told. Is it really a hydro? Isn't it more of an old school vacuum booster. I am debating getting rid of that and just using a master cylinder with a 1.25 or 1.5 bore with a 7 " vacuum booster on it. How much psi does that original booster give out psi wise? 1000?800?1200? What have many of you guys done for brake systems.

Hydro- boost it is not. Hydro- boost runs off power steering pump, mounted between master cylinder & firewall, didn't come out until 1973 . What you have is hyrdo-vac, booster is normal mounted under cab on frame rail.

Your truck should have a Hydrovac booster mounted on the frame. It is a large canister with vacuum and brake lines going to it. If memory serves me they add about 900 psi to your stopping pressure.

If you decide to put a modern dual pot master cylinder on your truck in place of the original, make sure the master cylinder bores are the same size.

My trucks all have the stock systems and do just fine, but they are also 100% new parts, including the lines and hoses.

If you eliminate the Hydro vac you will have very little braking power. If you want your truck to have good brakes, bite the bullet and fix everything and have the hydro vac rebuilt by a competent shop.

If you have the hydrovac rebuilt I would recommend Cardone. NAPA will ship it for you and they'll box it for you too. I had my hydrovac rebuilt by them and they did a excellent job plus a 1 year warranty
