my '54 3100 has a 235 with a cracked head. what, if any, problems should i look for if swapping heads from a '59 235? and what's a fair price for the thing? thanks.

I had a cracked head on my 235 and I had problems finding a cyl. head locally. I ended up purchasing a complete 59 motor for $350. I hope that helps a little in regard to price. Good luck with the swap.

I found a bare 848 head here in a junk yard last fall for $100, guaranteed. Figure in another $400 to have it rebuilt...

Yep--fairly common. I'd watch Ebay--go to wreckin yards--see if you can find one on the wreckin yard computer. Last one I bought was $100 for an 848---two years ago I think. When you get the new one--you need to drill the thermostat--do a search here. Also keep ur radiator in good shape and make sure its circulatin. I've heard they can be bought outta Mexico and South America--never done it and don't know the quality. Good luk.

There is a place in Dallas called Bishop Engine that has racks full of them for $100 each. They will garentee that you will not get a cracked one but won't pay for the magnafluxing. Hope this helps.

I used to go to Crosley Field to watch the Zinzinnati Redlegs when I was a kid.

i grew up in a rural 'burb of the QC in the 60's/70's, but havent been back in 15 years or so. i named my quasi-bluegrass/country band crosley field in honor of the 'ol ball yard.

I'm in California and they have a pull it yourself yard in town, I paided about 35 dollars w/core charge for a self pulled 235 "848" head off of a 61 chevy truck. I gave the used head a hand valve lapping job and installed it and it works great. Anyways, I have the old 848 head I'd part with cheaper than 100 if you want it. It isn't cracked (it was magnafluxed) but it had bad seats and one seat was completely messed up and caused a dead hole on my motor. I didn't have the money at the time to rebuild it so I got the one from the junkyard.
