Ok. I parked the truck on concrete facing downhill the other day and it leaked gear oil from the rear end on the ground. I need a new pinion seal. I tried searching the forums for a source but came up empty. They recently closed the Napa by me. It is a vacuum actuated 2 speed. Thanks, Mike
There should be a number on the old seal that any parts place can cross reference.
Of course you'll be down till you can get the new seal.

Hy lightningtruck, rear axle parts/seals can be very tricky to find. The period you are asking about, many rear axles used a felt rather than a seal and the part numbers in the GM parts book reference the felts. After looking through most of my seal catalogues I think the seal may be National 411330N, the dimensions of the seal are O.D. 3.486", I.D. or shaft size 2.598" width 0.5", hope that helps.
Klhansen - i will tear into it and see what I find, thanks! Luckily I don't need truck for groceries.
3B - Thanks for info. When I take it apart I will measure and post dimensions. Hopefully it is straight forward. I hope it is a real seal and not felt.
I guess they are Eaton axles? I have 2 '56 2spd rear axles here but from Fords. They look very similar. Mike
