Super:

Looks like some nice work, and we appreciate the photos. However, bandwith is extremely limited on the Stovebolt page, and costs $$$$.

So if you could simply post links to the pictures, not the photos themselves, I think the admins would REALLY appreciate it.

I'm not trying to sound rude, so please don't take it that way.

I'm not sure if you guys realize how I am posting pics.. This is the second or third time this is mentioned to me. The pics I put up are NOT hosted on stovebolt. If you look at the properties of each pic URL you will find they are hosted on my personal site. There is no bandwidth taken up on stovebolt. It does take a minute to load off my site, but that's it.

If I were to remove the pic from my site, it would be gone from here (hence hosted on my site). I could post 10,000 pics hosted from my site and not one ounce of bandwidth would be sucked out of Stovebolt.

I guess I will start all posts from here on out that have pics some thing to the effect of "All pictures are hosted on my personal website, therefor no bandwidth is being used on Stovebolt.com"

Well, perhaps you know more about how the Internet works than I do. All I know is that other folks in the past have posted images (also hosted on other web sites, such as photobucket), and the admins have asked them to take the images down, and replace them with links.

You could do that as well, by replacing the (img) (/img) tags with (url) (/url) and the pictures would still be on your web site, and we could still go look at them.

In any case, I was going by what has been said on this site before, and what the administrators have asked others to do. I have no quarrell with you, I just want to help the folks who so generously host this web site for us.

Stovebolt forum guide to posting pictures
Quote
Due to functional considerations we much prefer that you link all pictures, which means viewers can click on your 'hot link' to see the picture if they wish. If you put them 'inline', meaning they're displayed directly in the post, then every viewer has to see them every time they go to that thread. Our server is made busier than necessary, and dial-up users may be discouraged from returning to the thread to view others' responses. If you feel it's necessary to include the picture directly, please use small images only, such as the thumbnails some hosts provide, which link back to the full size picture, and consider those dial-up users when you're inclined to put a large number of images directly in a post! And a great advantage to linking to an image ... you can make the image as big as you like since it opens in a separate window!

The main reason for not including full size pictures is, as canyonag77 points out, that the owners of the 'Bolt prefer that you not.

You are mistaken, however, when you say that simply hosting pictures elsewhere means there is no impact on the 'Bolt's bandwidth. There is no impact on the 'Bolt's storage, but there is an impact on bandwidth.

Most web hosting companies give you a certain amount of storage space (the room on the server's hard disk that can be used to store data) AND a certain bandwidth limit (the number of bits and bytes that can travel through the 'pipes' each month). When you post large pictures which are stored on your server in the threads, there is no impact on the 'Bolt's total storage space. However, when anyone goes to the thread to view your post, the 'Bolt's server requests the bytes that represent your picture from your server. Bandwidth is used to bring the picture to the 'Bolt. Then the 'Bolt's server has to send that image to the viewer's computer, using more bandwidth.

Bottom line, however, is simply that the owners of the 'Bolt ask that we not include pictures in our posts.

Well, Super73, I enjoyed the pics-I have been wondering how well the newer engines would fit into the older trucks. Looks like you are pretty good w/a welder also. Brian

Super73 good job and thanks for the pics. Is good to see more folks using the new chevy motors. I'm going to be putting a 4.8L in my 49 Chevy and the pics will really help.

The images posted as they are should have no effect on stovebolt bandwidth. When your browser downloads this page for viewing it is making a request to stovebolt.com to get the forum and associated forum graphics, etc and it also makes a seperate request to show the pictures that Super73 is hosting on his site.

If I were an admin, however, I would agree with not posting large pictures simply because not everyone is on a highspeed connection and posting the pictures is basically forcing everyone to download large amounts of data that will slow their stovebolt enjoyment.

Read that in context. Server is busy PLUS large images being linked inline causes slow down for dial up users. I agree that courteous thing to do is link.

mfrazier01 & Super73, not entirely courtesy, as it does in fact add to the bit transfer charged to the bolt ... and as pointed out, the site owners policy here is to NOT use inline images unless they are quite small, like thumbnails

"This is the second or third time this is mentioned to me." slow learner?

Slow learner, not exactly.. Missinformed people that aren't quite sure how bandwidth works, perhaps.

Being a moderator on 2 other sites (LS1tech and 831ccr) I find it quite odd that there is a mandate to not show pics that are hosted on a different site for the wrong reasons. Yes, there is a small fraction of requested bit data that goes through the bolt, but we are talking minute.

This message I just typed requires more bandwidth than the pics I am showing.

As for people with dial ups. I can understand that part. From now on, I am willing to put "Not dial up friendly" in the title if that would make people happy. But there is always a stop and back button.

I'm not trying to be a jerk about it. The other sites that I help on like to share info. That is simply what I am trying to do.

Regardless of the technical issues, if the owners of the 'Bolt request that you not post large inline images and you do so anyway, then you are being a jerk about it. It's their board and their rules, deal with it.

Why isn't a link to a picture just as effective a way to share info in a post than then images themselves?

Robin,
The point is simply that the owners of the 'Bolt ask that it not be done that way. It's their board and their rules. What's the problem with posting links to the pictures rather than the pictures themselves?

"Missinformed people that aren't quite sure how bandwidth works, perhaps"
are the folks who've paid for this this site for over a decade, for our benefit "misinformed" as to it's cost?

"I'm not trying to be a jerk about it. The other sites that I help on like to share info. That is simply what I am trying to do."

"Why isn't a link to a picture just as effective a way to share info in a post than the images themselves?"

from the news letter, Nov bandwidth paid for by your hosts, John and Peg:::>
Hits: The total number of files requested from the server -- 5,323,559
Bytes: The amount of information transferred in filling those requests -- 65,065,756,198

who here has contributed cash for that?

the folks who do pay for this site have asked that inline pics NOT be used, are you saying, super73, that you refuse the request?

Bill

"This would allow folks to click on the link to see the bigger one, if they wanted to look at it more closely, but in the forum, the smaller picture loads faster and (here it comes) is better on our bandwidth."

"If you put them 'inline', meaning they're displayed directly in the post, then every viewer has to see them every time they go to that thread. Our server is made busier than necessary"

Misinformation.

Now, on to will I comply with the rules moving forward?

The reason I do it this way is I am lazy smile after busting my but on the truck at night, I want people to see the pics, so I start off by putting them on say LS1tech where they let you display your hosted images. Then I copy and paste them on the next site that might have interest in them. I do that on 3-4 sites. (LS1tech.com / Performancetrucks.net / stovebolt.com / 831ccr.com) It makes my life a little easier.

If you don’t want my pics great, one less site for me t copy and paste at.

Again, there is more bandwidth used on the bolt in this argueement than the 437 characters in the first post, 454 characters in the second post and 390 in the last one and for the redirects put together.

Again the only issue I see is dial up users. There really isn't a bandwidth loss hosting pics this way. I came up with a solution of adding "not dial up friendly" in the title.

Now, let’s stop the argueement here and let an owner of the site tell us what they would like to happen. If they don't want me and my pics here then fine, others can come see them on the other sites mentioned. I am not posting any more pics till they come by here. Which is kind of too bad as I just lifted the bed off the truck last night and started fabing up the fuel cell brackets and was going to show you that.

I also am not adding any more fuel to this argueement.

I'm wondering why you haven't had a direct discussion with them (outside the forums) already. Seems like the simplest thing. If you feel that strongly about it, and can prove your point, I'm sure the owners of this site are reasonable people and will accept your point.

Makes no sense. All you have to do to post links here instead of photos is to type "url" instead of "img", or hit the "URL" button instead of the "IMAGE" button on the full reply form. Just takes different clicks, not any more or any less.

Bottom line, I really don't understand why one would ignore the requests of the forum owners.

Canyon, If you go back to "edit" your post, it's very easy to copy and paste with the [img] links. There is no additional typing or deleting. Do it once for 4 sites = done quickly. Going back and editing it or changing my format for one site = more work.

BTW, PM sent to Stovebolt Staff

I'm not trying to be confrintational, so don't be offended.
I think the point is that there are rules on the site. It's an issue of consideration towards the owners and users of the Bolt, regardless of the issue of bandwidth.
I would have no idea how to even host my own website and I'm sure there are alot of others here in the same boat, so if we all posted pics by copy and paste from "my pictures" PROBLEMS, Correct? What your saying is your web site hosts the pictures and that dosen't use the bolts bandwidth.Correct? I don't know if thats the case or not, but dont you think if no one followed the rules of the site a lot of people would include pictures the wrong way.(whether they realized it or not ) Thats the real issue. The pictures are great, Nice welding and cool that your sharing the expierence. It will probably help someone who is having a hard time with the same project, but isn't there a gallery for pictures?

Using the gallerey would require bandwidth from stove bolt. Using a 3rd party site to host doesn't. That's why I do it that way..

Hello everyone. We are BAAAAAAAAAAAACK!!!

I just sent a PM to Canyon in response to his ?? about this thread.

PLEASE STOP the pictures. You all are right in one regard. Every time someone comes to this page, all those bytes in those images "transfer" onto our page (for viewing) and add up on our "byte transfers"
(Bytes: The amount of information transferred) -- as mentioned by Bill.

As I mentioned to Canyon in the email, about six years ago when the site was still pretty small, we thought transfers of bytes only had to do with where the 1's and 0's were stored. Oh no, said ProHosting - when we got a HUGE bill from them. If any of you may recall, that's when we had to shut down for a weekend because there was no way we could afford what was starting to happen to the site. (That's when American Classic offered the dedicated server for us.)

Anyway ... bottom line ... we are trying to keep our costs down so we don't have a bunch of advertisers on this site (they drive us nuts on other sites). One easy way is to limit images in the forum (since the entire website is FULL of great photos -- did you notice in the Gallery I've switch from some photos to some linked photos, also?)

So ... please keep your images to a link. Even with a link, it uses bandwidth ... but that is way better than having an image come up whether you want it or not, or even if you have already seen it the first time.

We are trying to be good stewards with the donations from the folks who are wanting to see all this keep on going!

Thanks.
Peggy

eek WHOA! Hold on just a minute! I just want to make clear that I did not run and tattle to Stovebolt Staff. Anything I have had to say about this subject, I said it here in the open forum. So when the Grand Poohbah (GPB) says
Quote
I just sent a PM to Canyon in response to his ?? about this thread.
I can only assume that the GPB means the questions I raised on this forum. Or perhaps he meant to say he sent the email or PM to Super73, since I have not gotten anything in email or PM at this time.

Super73, I applaud you for taking your questions to the GPB and complying with their wishes. And I still say, as I did in my first reply on this thread

Canyon,

I'm not saying you went and tattled.. Being a mod elsewhere I get a lot of reported links from people and know anyone can go state their concerns. Most people that do report things aren't open in that link discussing their opinion and choose to hide behind the report key. Regardless of if you or anyone else went to the GPB the decissions made were based on the way their server works. Much to my suprise their server company does things backwards in my mind and are out to make money anyway they can frown

I have started a new thread on SB linked to another site that I will be updating with progress (with pictures directly in the main topic). In the SB thread I will simply advise when an update has been made and will try to answer any and all questions regarding my build in that SB link.

I figure this will keep the issues here to a dull roar, keep doing things the way I want and people can still learn from my experience. Hope that works for all.

As far as I am cincerned this thread is closed...

Thanks Super 73. As far as I know, no one, especially you, accused me of "tattling" to the mods.

But the way I read the GPB's post, it sure implied that I did.

I think that they intended to say that they emailed you. And of course, you weren't complaning to them, you were simply asking them a question, which is the way things ought to be done.

The fact that I have yet to receive an email from them backs up that supposition.

I just wanted to "clear my name" a little. I don't make it a habit to whine to the mods, and I certainly did not in this case.

Finally, thanks for continuing to keep us informed on your project.
