Hi guys, anybody ever fitted a 460 big-block to a 49 chevy pick up, I took delivery today of a 73 camaro front clip which will be fitted over the next few weeks, I know a big block chevy maybe the simpler route but they fetch seriously big money in the uk and are hard to find, and although the chevy has superior styling I do like a ford engine. Any help would be greatly appreciated

The biggest concern will be the oil pan clearance .The sump is little different and may not clear the Camaro sub frame.Other than that you can probobly make it work.

If you use a camaro sub-frame for your front end the question then becomes more has anyone ever put a 460 in to a 73 camaro. I would think the first thing that you would have to do is find an aftermarket oil pan with a rear sump. The stock ford pan is a front sump and will hit the camaro cross member. Is that ford motor that mutch cheeper than the chevy in the UK? It's so much cheeper to biuld a chevy here than anyother.

I have a question. Is the 460 a Ford 460? Or is it a BBC overbored to 460? Could be a big difference when you try to make the conversion.

I'm sure either one would fit, since I've seen an Oldsmobile 455 installed in an AD truck once. The BOP 455 is a very wide engine, and if that will fit, almost anything will...with mods.

I understand that an aftermarket oil pan is available for the Ford with the "pan" at the rear, I guess that should have been my question.

Big block chevy`s in the uk fetch unbelievable ptices, I bought my 460 Ford as a running engine with transmission for about $1200 dollars, I would expect to pay $3 - 4000 dollars for a 454 Chevy without transmission and needing a rebuild, if ever you guys come to the uk on vacation you know what to bring with you and it ain`t coffee

Yes it`s a Ford 460 that was in a Thunderbird originally

Nice engines with a lot of stroker potential. I think you can stroke the stock block up to 510 cubic inches if you wanted to.

You've got to customize the mounts anyway, so just go for it, with steel stock and welder ready.

you can get a pan with the sump at the rear,but the oil pumps still at the front so the pan is clearanced for the pump and extended pickup.you could do like i did and buy a cadillac 472 or 500 from an eldorado.they're dirt cheep and torque monsters.

The welders ready and plenty of steel in stock as well as loads of patience, even my wife is looking forward to driving it sometime soon, will keep you posted

Thanks for the reply, have you ever seen one of these rear panned sumps, I was just interesteed to know how much depth there is at the front, I appreciate the oil pump is still there but unlike most stock cars over here the chevy truck has a lot of clearance under the hood to raise the engine up a bit.
I did originally have plans to stick it into a ford P100 pick-up but the hood line of modern cars was too low, we also have far too many people at the Department of Transport who take a dim view of engines poking through hoods, some accept it others don`t, any way I`ll keep on until I run out of money/patience/luck, thanks for the reply, don`t be stranger and remember anybody can restore a historic vehicle, it takes a man to cut one up and rod it

With that welder & patience why couldn,t a guy cut the lower part of the pan off & turn it around & weld it back on. Just a thought.

Murray, I don't have the answer to your question...But, I do know that it can be done! As far as wleing a pan bottom inverted, that seems like alot of work, and don't foget that the oil pickup needs to be a precise amount off the bottom of the pan! I would suggest 2 things: first, go to www.nastyz28.com and look around. It is a 2nd generation Camaro website, 2nd, go to summit.com and look at their healthy selection of pans. They have great customer service at Summit and will be happy to help. i wouldn't even bother mentioning the truck, just tell them what the engine is and that it's going into a 73 Camaro...
